Britain is providing an extra £50 million to pay for cancer medicines from October, bringing forward a government promise to give access to drugs even if they have not been approved by the NHS cost watchdog.

More than a quarter of teenagers will get sunburnt on purpose this summer in the belief that they will ultimately get a suntan, a survey has found.

The Teenage Cancer Trust discovered that 26 per cent of young people aged 13 to 19; plan to get sunburnt on purpose this year.

Allergy sufferers less likely to develop cancer

People who suffer from allergies are less likely to develop cancer than others, scientists in America have stated.

Research carried out by a team at Texas Tech University looked into the possible link between the development of ovarian cancer and allergies to airborne substances.

Guidelines to speed up diagnosis of brain tumours in children

Scientists at Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the Universities of Nottingham and Southampton have developed new guidelines that should help doctors to diagnose brain tumours in children more quickly.

At present, children may feel unwell for months before they are diagnosed with a brain tumour. Two recent studies found that UK children with brain tumours may face a 2.5-month or 3.5-month wait before they receive a diagnosis. This delay means they are more likely to develop life-threatening complications and experience vision loss and other neurological problems.

Cancer patients miss out on more than £90m in benefits

Over one-third of people with terminal cancer are not getting the benefits to which they are entitled, a study by Macmillan Cancer Support has found.

Terminally ill cancer patients should automatically qualify for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) – which helps people meet the extra costs incurred because of disability – and Attendance Allowance (AA) if they are aged 65 or over.

New guidance hopes to improve cervical cancer diagnosis in young women

New guidance has been produced to help GPs identify symptoms of cervical cancer and facilitate early diagnosis of the disease in young women.

In England, screening for cervical cancer starts at age 25. Cervical cancer is rare in young women but GPs still need to be aware of the symptoms so that they know when to refer them to a specialist.

Under- 18’s in England and Wales could be banned from using sunbeds as rates of skin cancer continue to rise. The government-backed proposal was announced last week and follows the Scottish ban which came into effect last year.
